HISTORY
Frère Jacques, aka Are You Sleeping Brother John, is a 17th century Nursery Rhyme of French origin. The rhyme is traditionally sung in a round. A round is a musical composition where three voices sing the exact same melody in unison.

The theory surrounding the origin of this song is that a friar, aka latin term for brother in the Christian community, overslept & was urged to wake up so he could ring the bell for the monks.
In the English language, Friar is derived from the Old French word Frere, as French was the language still used in the 13th Century throughout England when the four great orders of friars started. Jacques on the other hand is not translated to John or Jean. It would actually be translated into James or Jacob.

Brother John, Brother John,
Morning bells are ringing! Morning bells are ringing!
